Doctor arrested for selling banned drugs

Gossip Lanka News - A doctor treating drug addicts has been arrested by Negombo division anti vice squad for selling banned prescription drugs to youths and also operating an abortion clinic.

Protests had been carried out in Negoombo in the past couple of days against police inaction over various intoxicants targeting the young and students in the vicinity of Negombo, Ada Derana reporter said.


 Police had received information that the doctor in question has provided a certain prescription drug, used an intoxicant by youth, without any prescription or making a diagnosis.

Acting on this information, police deployed an undercover officer to purchase the banned prescription drug from the doctor, who reportedly sold a stock of capsules to the officer for Rs. 17,500.

Gampaha District Food and Drug Inspector H.P. Priyaratne who assisted in the raid confirmed that the drug sold by the doctor is banned in the market.

Police then proceeded to inspect the medic’s residence and seized a large stock of banned prescription drugs and 15 National Identity Cards belonging to males and females.

Upon being interrogated the doctor revealed that he had operated an abortion clinic and obtained the NICs of women who had arrived for abortions and their guardians as required.

The suspect is to be produced before the Negombo District Magistrate.
